My workshops focus on the stories of our ancestors and through these stories reconnecting with the Earth. Like stories, nature has rhythm too and once we have relearned the rhythms and patterns present in our ancestor’s tales, we will be able to hear when nature tells us its own stories, through its rhythms and patterns. What’s more, we’ll want to listen. My workshops aim to foster a love of story, understand these rhythms and in turn reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.
I currently run four different workshops for adults & educators based on the subject of storytelling and fairytale. These workshops discuss the origins of fairytale, the oral storytelling tradition and encourage the participants to write and perform their own stories. For more information on when and where I am next running a workshop please click on my events page here. If you would like me to facilitate a workshop for your group or organisation please do not hesitate to contact me via the contact page below.
Rewild Yourself Through Story: The Stories Of Our Ancestors
From Basile to the Grimms the workshop takes a brief look at the story collectors from the 15th century to present day in order to discover the evolving nature of stories, explore the narratives of our childhood and learn more about the oral storytelling tradition.
In this one day fairytale spree we explore the essence of fairytale, its structure, symbolism, tropes and motifs and start to understand the messages and lessons that are woven into these ancient tales.
During the day there is the opportunity to listen to some of these stories told by DD a professional storyteller and, in the afternoon, start to look at a fairytale of your choosing and understand the elements and structure within it using the the theory learnt during the day. In this way, we begin our journey as storytellers.
Rewild Yourself Through Story: Keeper Of Stories
Continue your journey to rewild yourself through story in this one day workshop in which participants learn the stepping stones to telling their own story, using nature as your inspiration.
Led by author and professional storyteller Dawn Nelson, you will have the opportunity to explore storytelling techniques through the use of theory and practical exercises to bring your tale to life, as well as hints, tips and techniques on how to build your chosen narrative into a performance.
In the afternoon participants are invited to share their story with the group.
Tarot Tales - The Inner Story
Discover your inner story. In this full day workshop join professional storyteller, DD Storyteller, to unlock story through tarot, oracle and/or story dice.
By using the images and correspondences in the cards we can start to create our own fairytales, whether they be our own or fictional masterpieces yet to be written.
Through games and exercises, throughout the day, participants will each develop a story based on cards from tarot or oracle decks. Participants are then encouraged to share their stories around the fire.
Reading To Children
Evening Workshop - 2.5hrs
In my opinion there is nothing more important than reading to children. This two and a half hour workshop, designed for parents and carers of young children (0-6) to coach skills in reading stories aloud to children. The workshop includes hints and tips on how to engage children in the story, interaction with your audience and what makes a good picture book. A short break is included in this workshop where refreshments would be provided.
What The Participants Thought ...
'I signed up to the story telling workshop with a mix of excitement and nerves. Dawn was great at making us all feel welcome and comfortable. It soon became clear there was no wrong answers, daft questions or prescribed way of storytelling. What we found was a font of knowledge, a space to explore and freedom to share. I came away inspired and feeling like I had made new friends. In fact I joined the Storytelling Club which takes place in the same amazing setting.' - Heather Chalkley
'Really interesting and a good relaxed environment'
'Thank you DD - loved it!'
'There was a very good balance set between theory, history and learning in the morning and active idea generation, writing and sharing in the afternoon.'
'My expectations were well exceeded.'
'Loved all of it.'
